Uncanny Valley

We spent months sound designing and mixing this incredible short film from 3dar studios. A dystopian vision of the possible future of Virtual Reality, it’s a little ironic that we did this film just before we started working on a series of actual VR projects. It currently has 1.2 million views on Vimeo and may have a future as a feature film!

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit VR

My company Impossible Acoustic provided surround sound mixes for the first Sports Illustrated Swimsuit VR edition. Mostly this involved creating the ambient sounds like trees blowing and ocean waves around the models so that when the viewer turns their head the sounds move in a realistic fashion enhancing the feeling of immersion.

One of another set of cooking videos we did for Kroger. A little more family friendly than the previous set of cooking with weed videos we did. Once again though, most of the sounds you here were performed by our resident Foley artist Jamie Hunsdale.

Tumblestone Trailer

Another fantastic game trailer from Imagos Films. This time for the game Tumblestone. I especially enjoyed giving the microphone a strong sonic presence with handling noises, feedback and changes in voice quality as “Mr. Microphone” did or didn’t speak directly into the mic.

Motorola 21 IN 1

This was a large project Impossible Acoustic did with VML and Motorola. This photograph was broken up into 21 squares with a 15 second video vignette corresponding to each one. The sound design for each video incorporated elements from the soundscapes of the surrounding frames. How cool is that!

Another fun gig for Jamie and myself at Impossible Acoustic. It was like mixing a short film and then sound designing a motion graphics piece on top of it. Honestly, I still don’t really understand what it’s for but it sounds and looks cool!

Westerado

This interactive trailer by Imagos Films for the Adult Swim game “Westerado” was criminally under viewed when it came out. Just look at the care and attention that went into the set design, the costumes, the blocking, the incredible music and of course the Impossible Acoustic team had a great time doing tons of Foley and sound design for this.

The Ants Go Marching

This short film by Charles Dillon Ward premiered at the Nashville Film Festival. We did sound design, dialog edit, Foley and a 5.1 surround mix for this. It’s a very quiet film which one might think would make the sound design easier but actually takes a lot more attention to detail because every small thing stands out.

Impossible Acoustic did all the audio post production for this feature length documentary about “ultra-senior” tennis directed by Kate Dandel. Our frequent collaborator Noah Bonds helped us record and sync every single tennis ball hit in the film (there’s a lot). Catherine Grealish wrote the score. We mixed in surround at Clatter&Din studios. The film was well received at the premiere at SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival).

The Bond

The Bond is a short film by first time director Bryan Campbell.  Jamie Hunsdale and I took care of all the audio post production as well as doing a 5.1 mix at Clatter&Din studios.  What really impressed me about this film was how simple the story was and how much it dared to rely on performance and the sheer craft of film making to elevate it far above the text on the page.  It’s currently  making the rounds in the festival circuit so if you get a chance to go see it do!  Click play to watch a short excerpt.

If you’ve been following my posts here or on my blog you’ve been seeing the name Jamie Hunsdale a lot.  He’s an amazing Foley artist and he and I have joined forces recently and launched the company Impossible Acoustic.  Jamie has really turned me on to the potential of performing sound design live with props rather than relying entirely on pre-recorded sounds.  This project epitomizes the power of that philosophy.  Another company originally did all the sound work for this project, and did a decent job too, but it wasn’t as nuanced and vibrant as it could have been so we were brought on to start afresh.  We made multiple trips to the hardware store and experimented with a lot of different techniques and then spent a lot of time mixing and sweetening with library sounds.  We’re really proud of the results.  Click on the picture to watch one of the six videos but be sure to check out this link to watch all the videos as they were intended to be seen.

Doug Stapleton, the director of this short form thriller, is someone who truly understands and values sound as a potent storytelling tool.  He thought about sound early on, even taking his production sound mixer Josh Svare to scout locations with him.  He prioritized sound on set and in post so of course we loved working with him!  I did sound design and mix and worked with Jamie “Foley Rambo” Hunsdale on the Foley track.  We mixed the film at Clatter&Din studios.
