JourneyQuest

Journey Quest

I’m doing all the audio post production for Journey Quest Season 2.  It’s been an incredibly fun project to work on and also very challenging.  It’s not everyday I get to do voice processing for warlocks composed of shadow, or design creature sounds for giant corpse worms or mix epic sword fights.  I was a huge fan of this show before I had the opportunity to work on it.  I think the writing, acting, and direction are all fantastic.  All episodes are free to watch online.  Check them out at JourneyQuest.com.

Director – Ben Dobyns
Writer – Matt Vancil
Starring – Fran Kranz, Bob Sapp, Christian Doyle, Anne K. Brady, Jesse Lee Keeter

Caesura

Caesura

This is the senior thesis project of artist and animator Samala Coffey.   It’s about a rabbit coming to terms with a sudden and world wide technological collapse.  All the backgrounds and puppets were painted and made by hand and animated by Samala over a period of months.  I provided sounds and music.  You can see more of Samala’s work on her portfolio site and read more about the animating process on her blog.

Mother Nature

Mother Nature

Mother Nature is a feature film from director Johan Liedgren.  I provided sound design and was Foley engineer/editor, Matt Sheldon recorded the production sound, Josh Svare did the dialog edit, Steve Ditto was the Foley artist and Sam Grey mixed. The entire film is set in the woods and the woods plays a major role in the film so ambiances were very important.  I spent a day recording out in the field and another couple day constructing a 5.1 soundscape that was detailed and variable enough to be interesting for an entire film.

Director – Johan Liedgren
Starring – Phillip Roebuck, Shawn Belyea and Elliot Liedgren

Eden

Eden

I just finished work on another amazing film.    Based on the real life events of a sex trafficking survivor in the United States, Eden has won wide acclaim and awards at festivals across the nation, including the audience choice award at the 2012 SXSW festival .  I served as sound designer and Foley engineer alongside an amazing team at Clatter&Din studios, including Eric Johnson, Jamie Hunsdale and Joshua J. Savre.  The director and the producers were all very attuned to the importance of good sound on set and in post production so it was an absolute pleasure to work with them.

90’s Night

90’s Night

Just for the fun of it, I decided to see if I could make a coherent  audio drama in under a minute with minimal dialogue.  What intrigues me about audio drama as a medium is that it takes an investment of attention and imagination and,  like books, everyone imagines things a little differently.  What do you hear?

Uncertain Ice

Uncertain Ice

Uncertain Ice is a documentary about the incredible commitment of Mauri Pelto and his children and his 50 year commitment to study the melting glaciers of the North Cascades.  The 50 minute film features incredible cinematography, a compelling score and of course top notch sound design from yours truly.  I made a field recording trip up into the mountains for this project and had a ton of fun creating the sounds of wind, water, wildlife and the sounds of Mauri and his team tromping over snow, ice and rock as they collected their data.  Click on the picture to watch an excerpt.

Safety Not Guaranteed

Safety Not Guaranteed

Even after months of working on this movie I can’t wait to see it again in Theaters.  It’s that good.  I had the immense pleasure of serving as lead sound designer for the film as well as the Foley engineer.  I worked with a fantastic team at Clatter&Din studios and I’m proud but not surprised that the film is one of the 16 official selections in the drama category at this years Sundance Film Festival!

Green My Eyes

Pretty Face and Green My Eyes

Pretty Face and Green My Eyes is a a short film about first love told through a nostalgic look back at the early 90’s music explosion in Seattle.  I’ve been on a long string of sound design and audio post projects so it was a welcome change of pace to write the score for the this sweet, romantic film.

I won an award!

I just won the Park City Film Music Festival silver medal for excellence in original music for a short film award for the film Guilty Shoes!  Funny thing was I didn’t know the film was in the running or had even been entered in the competition.  I only found out through local message boards.

The Divine Marigolds

I recently did all the post audio work for the pilot episode of “The Divine Marigolds” a comedy TV show shot entirely in West Seattle where I live.  How perfect is that.  It’s actually really good and really funny.  I’d totally watch it.  There are a number of networks interested and with any luck it will get picked up.  Check out the website here and their facebook page here.

Heart Breaks Open

Heart Breaks Open

Heart Breaks Open is a feature length narrative film improvised from a four page outline and shot like a documentary.  The acting is outstanding and everyone involved was a blast to work with.  I took care of all the post production audio.  Like the rest of the movie the audio straddled the gap between narrative film and documentary.  Edit – Heart Breaks Open has played and won awards at festivals all over the world including the 2011 Red Wasp Film Festival award for best film!

Director, Producer – Billie Rain, Basil Shadid

Guilty Shoes

Guilty Shoes

Guilty Shoes is a short film by Ryan Clausen.  It’s a rare director who has the vision to leave as much space for sound and music as this film does. The film is told in a series of flashbacks and dream sequences and it’s sometimes hard to tell which scenes are real.  As composer and sound designer, there were plenty of opportunities for me to do some very subjective sound design and blur the line between sound and score.  Probably my most creative project to date and definitely a treat to work on.

Director – Ryan Clausen
Starring – Julian Curelop, Christopher Waun and John Fantasia

The Search for Kennyboy

The Seach For Kennyboy

Wow what a great experience.  There were certain scenes in this movie that had me laughing no matter how many times I saw them.  I had the privilege of working under the supervision of the very talented Jake Perrine as well as working alongside Josh Svare, Fernando Labarthe.  As lead sound effects editor, and with 110 minutes of material to cover, I was really able to dig in and do everything from fight scenes to UFO’s and giant earth shrinking lasers!   Edit – Kennyboy has won the STIFF 2012 audience award!

Director – Justin Wood
Starring – Mike McCown, Kelly Hyde, Demone Gore and Paul Eenhoorn

Divine Marigolds Vignette

The Divine Marigolds

This is a character vignette for the television show “The Divine Marigolds”,  “a heartfelt, quirky comedy about a large, Irish Catholic family set in the gorgeous Alki Neighborhood of Seattle, Washington and all the drama and hilarity that ensues as they live their lives as sons, daughters, husbands, wives, spouses and siblings.”  I volunteered to do dialogue editing and sound design for this vignette to help get the project going.

Violence

Violence

I am extremely proud to announce the release of my first commercial sample library.  Each of the 82 instruments are made from playing the violin in all the wrong ways.  I struck it with chopsticks, plucked strings with guitar picks, beat it with mallets and drum stick and hands, I rubbed it, scraped it, bowed it, shook it and then took all of those recordings and individually processed each sample.  Sometimes the processing was minimal, sometimes extreme.  Combined with individually programmed interface and controls for each instrument this library is an orchestra in an of itself.  Albeit a very bizarre orchestra.  Visit VIR2.com for more details and to listen to the audio demos then buy it here.  Click on the image to view the product trailer.

Moving Day of the Dead

Moving Day of the Dead

I love the 48hr film competition.  It’s a great way to meet new people and it really tests your skills under pressure.  A Craigslist add hooked me up with a really fun crew including director Henry Darrow McComas and composer Eric Goetz.

Crazy Daddy

Crazy Daddy

This is one of those projects that I’ll have to catalog in the “great learning experience” category. No disrespect to anyone involved. We all did our best at the time to make a short film with no budget. I wrote the score, mixed and supervised a small team of sound effects editors. The resulting audio track is not my best work, but I’m proud of the score and one could argue that the patchy audio matches the intentionally B movie aesthetic of the film.

Director/Writer – Nils Osmar
Starring – Kevin Cox, Tyson Dailey and Heather King
Sound Team – Myself, Paul Miller, Mike Myers, Laura Edenfield

Data Rapture

Data Rapture

Data Rapture was the winner of the  “Best Film” and “Best Art Direction” awards at the 2010 untethered.tv 48hr film challenge.  I wrote the score and Laura Edenfield and I sound designed and mixed this film in a ridiculously short amount of time.  I think it was about 3 hours once editing was completed.   Though we did get a chance to do some touch ups later on.  Click on the picture to watch the entire film.
